A hands-free dog leash system is usually three parts: the dog waist belt you wear low on your hips, a lead that clips to that belt, and a connection point on your dog — ideally a harness. Some kits sell the belt and lead together. Others let you clip your existing leash to a dog leash belt with a carabiner.
Force that used to yank your wrist now goes into your core. That is why runners and hikers like them. It is also why a sudden lunge from a medium or large dog can spin you sideways if you are not ready. Your hips are stronger than your hand. They are not a magic brake.

Hands-free only works if your dog already walks on a loose leash
If your dog pulls until your shoulder complains, clipping that same energy to your waist does not create manners. It creates a back problem with better branding.
Rule of thumb before you buy: your dog can walk past another dog, a street vendor, and a parked scooter without a hard lunge most days. They respond to a verbal slow-down or heel without you hauling the lead. They stop when you stop. Without those, hands free walking asks your hips to do a trainer's job.

Fit low on the hips, not up under your ribs. If the belt rides up when your dog moves ahead, size down or pick a design that stays put over a light jacket. Indian winters still need room for a hoodie. Monsoon days need something you can wipe clean.
Quick-release buckle is non-negotiable. If your dog bolts toward traffic or tangles around a cycle, you need a way out that does not involve untying a knot with one hand. A sliding D-ring or carabiner that lets the dog move side to side without spinning the whole belt around your waist is worth paying for.
Bungee sections soften sudden jerks. Fixed-length leads give clearer control on crowded pavements. For most Indian neighbourhood walks, I prefer a shorter fixed lead with a grab handle near the dog — the traffic handle — so I can take the leash back into my hand in two seconds. Long bungee leads that stretch past two metres are a trip hazard near auto rickshaws and school bags.
Pockets for bags and keys are fine. They are not why the belt works.
Pair the belt for dog walking with a harness, never a collar alone
Clip a hands-free dog leash to a flat collar and a hard stop lands on your dog's neck and trachea. That is a bad trade for free hands.
Use a well-fitted harness. Back-clip is usually fine for dogs who already walk loosely. Front-clip can help if they still drift into mild pulling — it is still training support, not a waist-belt miracle. The collar can stay on for ID tags. The walking force should not live there.
Check fit every few months on growing puppies and after weight changes. Two fingers under the straps is a useful check. If the harness slides toward the elbows or rides up into the armpits, resize before the next belt walk.

Indian cities need a shorter, tighter belt setup than trail runs abroad
